The assessment is accurate. Actually, Japan has an easy solution: vastly improve ties with China, which is actually not difficult to do. Just a straightforward apology for WWII atrocities by a single person -- the prime minister -- and shelf the Diaoyu/Senkaku problem (both parties issue a joint statement acknowledging that both sides have claims, and both agree to joint developments of the area). Remember: China's original position was joint development with all countries to settle island disputes (at least for this generatuon).

The soultions to Japan's problems are simple and straightforward. But the Japanese mindset cannot change. It cannot move out of its comfort zone (the US bosom), even as the comfort zone is becoming increasingly uncomfortable.
