Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.
- Napoleon Bonaparte -
That's what makes the U.S. unique among countries with strong religious
beliefs and traditional values. Ever notice that religious fundamentalism
and poverty in foreign countries seem to go hand-in-hand?
A VERY interesting statistic in relation to religion: If there's one
generalization you can make about religion and wealth, it's that the less
people "believe", the richer they stand a chance of being. 19 of the richest
countries in the world have 70% or more of their populations saying that
religion is not at all important in their lives. And the poorest societies
in the world are the most fundamentalist and superstitious.
Start with Rwanda and work your way down:

In the world's poorest countries, simply EVERYONE is a "believer".
Why is religious belief so bad for wealth creation? Because in general,
religiosity is connected with the idea that the here and now can't be
improved, so you should focus on the spiritual and look forward to a next
world instead of eking out a miserable existence in this one. It makes quite
a bit of sense when you live in a turd-world shithole.
In the rich world, on the other hand, people are generally great believers
in their capacity to alter their destiny through effort and perseverance.
To explain the "anomaly" of the United States, religion seems not to
slow down economic growth because it is a particular sort or religion: an
overwhelmingly PROTESTANT and exceptionally materialistic kind. The American
God doesn't want you to think of building the new Jerusalem in the next
world. He wants it here in L.A., New York, or Chicago.
We'll see long the "Protestant work ethic" lasts once the Millennials and
Zoomers realize that their all their efforts have been in vain, with little
to look forward to besides long hours, low pay, no benefits, hellish working
conditions, and asshole bosses, not to mention the whopping student loans
that they'll never be able to pay off...
