Free speech is written into the US Constitution. The First Amendment states:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Try "Campus Protest Encampments Are Unethical" in which the author
argued that campus protest against Israel continuous occupying and
killing in Gaza is unethical.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/09/campus-protest-encampments-unethical/679882/

"Proponents of the encampments felt that their cause was urgent, that
occupying space to protest is a time-honored tactic in the tradition of
the civil-rights movement, and that calling police to clear encampments
was violent authoritarianism. Critics of encampments countered that,
when deployed last semester, they disrupted teaching and learning,
violated the rights of many students to traverse their own campuses,
caused some to fear for their physical safety, sparked violence, and
imposed those costs and others without ending the war in Gaza or having
any realistic chance of doing so."

Too be sure, constitutions usually represent ideals shared by the
people.
What those ideals means is more complicated. And heavily depends on the
people which have all kind of views.

Subsequently, interpretation of ideals such as freedom is subjected to
court's decision.

Is the US court functioning as IMAGINED?

In Western democracies, the legal system is used to limit civil
disobedience as a form of political protest.

"Revealed: how the fossil fuel industry helps spread anti-protest laws
across the US"

"Civil disobedience is a form of political protest that involves
breaking the law in a planned, symbolic way – which activists and rights
experts say is part of the bedrock of a democratic society and in the
tradition of civil rights movements.

The months-long investigation by the Guardian found that companies and
lawmakers sought to increase the threat of criminal action against
activists to protect oil and gas expansion – even as deadly and
destructive extreme weather events hit communities nationwide.

Last year was the hottest on record, and wildfires, baking temperatures,
deadly floods and rising sea levels struck communities across North
America – and the rest of the world. Under the Biden administration, the
US has handed out more than 1,450 new oil and gas licences, accounting
for half of the total globally, and 20% more licences than those issued
by Donald Trump, who has promised to “drill, baby, drill” should he
return to the White House.

The findings from dozens of freedom of information requests suggest that
the right to peaceful protest is under attack in the US – much like in
other major democracies including the UK, Germany, Canada and
Australia."

You have to guarantee the right to private property in the Constitution.
Private property is not to be seized without permission, or fair
compensation.

No country has a monopoly on what is democracy which means "People
Rule." The Chinese people would collectively decide its form democracy.

The Chinese people in the PRC, including Hong Kong, don't have democracy.

University campuses are where college students meet, speak and
therefore protest. Of course, their protests obstructed other members of
university from using the facility. But then all protests, would
obstruct other members of the community from using the same space.
